Unto Elisabeth Laurel, Jeanne Marie Wreath, Margaret Pelican, the SCA College of Arms, and all others who do receive this letter, greetings from Tanczos Istvan, Blue Tyger Herald!

It is the intent of Easterners to register the following items. Unless otherwise noted, the submitter has no desire for authenticity and allows any changes.

1. John Williams of Farnham (m) - New change of holding name

Holding Name: John Williams of the East

His original name submission, John Williams, is being returned from the June 2006 LoAR for conflict with John FitzWilliam and with the mundane composer John Williams. The 'appeal' sent to Laurel in February was supposed to include the locative byname, it was inadvertendly ommitted from the form. Addition of a name phrase ("of Farnham") is sufficient to clear both conflicts. V.1.b.2 says that names with a different number of name phrases do not conflict. The mundane composer is not from Farnham and the city is not in any way associated with him, so this addition should clear that conflict.

John and William are found all over the place. Karen Larsdatter's "An Index to the 1523 Subsidy Roll for York and Ainsty, England" ( http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/york16/index.htm ) lists 203 occurrences of 'John' and 209 occurrences of 'Willam'. Karen Larsdatter's "An Index to the 1296 Lay Subsidy Rolls for Rutland, England" ( http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/Rutland/index.htm ) lists 164 occurrences of 'John' and 248 occurrences of 'William'. Talan Gwynek's "Given Names from Early 13th Century England" ( http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/eng13/eng13.html ) lists 126 occurrences of 'William' and 70 occurrences of 'John'. Talan Gwynek's "Late 16th Century English Given Names" ( http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/eng16/eng16.html ) lists 1215 occurrences of 'Jon' and 786 occurrences of 'William'.

Williams is found as a surname in Reaney, P.H. & R.M. Wilson; A Dictionary of English Surnames, Revised Edition; Routledge & Kegan Paul, New York, 1991; s.n. Williams p. 493, which gives a 'Thomas Willames' 1307 and a 'Robert 'Williames' 1309.

Farnham is from ibid, p. 163, which gives 'Robert de Farnham' 1219, 'Richard de Farenham' 1205, and 'John de Farnam' 1323.

There is exactly one action on this letter, which is a change of holding name. There is no charge for this action, so we're not going to send money.
