1 Anneis Blanke (F) - resub name pended

'Anneis' - R&W (s.n. Annas) cites 1154-89. The name is cited in Talan's index (s.n. Agnes). If the name must be changed, the submitter cares most about sound.

Mixed in with the new submission forms were copies of the original submission forms. Consequently, this submission was inadequately labeled and mixed with the wrong information. It will appear with the corrected information on the East Kingdom December 2004 ILoI.

As an example in the description of the construction of the first names of German origin (here Mathilde): ( http:fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathilde ) De: indicates the geographic origin. Ravenelvillage in France (Picardie) see the site ( http://ravenel.oise.free.fr/ ) Copy of ID document belonging to the submitter and indicating the adress in Ravenel. Armorial du dénombrement de la Comté de Clermont en Beauvaisus (1373-1376) describing in #806 the arms of Noë the Ravenel (published by Michel Popoff, ISBN 2-86377-145-x, Paris, Le Leopard d'Or, 1998). Nom de Lieux de Picardie: indicating p 168 the origin of the name Ravenel (Ravenellum, dated 1258) from the name of a sort of horseradish. (Jacques Chaurand & Murice Lebé, ISBN 2-86-253-265-7, Ed. Bonneton, Condé-sue-Noireau 200) If the name must be changed, the submitter cares most about an unspecified language/culture.

The name has been changed from 'Brunehilde de Ravenel' to more closely match the available documentation.

The s-gabriel report 2745 does not cite 'Brunehilde' or any French form of this name; it cites 'Brunihilda' 774 in Bavaria. The cited forms are all modern spellings.

Commenters found that Morlet I:61b lists 'Brunihildis' a.774 and a.788, 'Prunnihilt' a.817, and 'Brunihelt' a.853 in Eastern France.

The byname 'de Ravenel' is found in Aryanhwy's French names from Paris 1421, 1423, 1438 at (http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/paris1423.html) once in 1421. D&R, s.n. 'Ravenel', cites a place in Oise, part of Picardy, but without any dated example, but dates 'Ravenellum' to the 13th century.

This would be the first armory registration using a lauburu as a charge. The submission includes copes from several sources supporting the use of lauburu as a charge. It is called 'la croix Basque' at (http://gofree.indigo.ie/~janoty/euskadi/croix.htm). Claude Wezler's 'Le guide de l'héraldique' calls the reverse of this image a 'croix virgulée' on p189. José-M^a Valladolid y Manzano's 'La Heráldica Oficial' at (http://www.fortunecity.com/victorian/prado/203/index.html) shows sable 'cruces vascas (aluburu)' used as secondary charges in the arms of Ajánguiz. No dates were demonstrated, and the various documentation was presented without translation from the French and Spanish sources. Even so, we have in the past registered charges with less documentation than was provided in this case by simply blazoning the charge in more common terms, such as might be done here by replacing 'lauburu azure' with 'saltire arrondi of four gouttes de larmes conjoined at the tails couped' or similar.

There was some concern raised over the resemblance of a lauburu to a swastika. Though the bulbous arms of the lauburu are quite visibly dissimilar to those of a swastika, the two charges are similar in shape.

3 Ciarán mac Gáeth (M) - new name forwarded

'Cairenn' - OC&M's Irish Names, 2nd ed, p 44 'mac' - 'son of' 'Gaeth' - q.v., p 109 If the name must be changed, the submitter cares most about Irish Gaelic language/culture.

The name has been changed from 'Ciaran mac Gáeth' to more closely match the available documentation. The form of the surname is a best-guess, and may need to be modified.

The 'Cairenn' cited from OCM is a feminine name, known only from legend. OCM does, however, list 'Ciarán' on p.51. That same spelling is also found in Mari Elspeth nic Bryan's 'Index of Names in Irish Annals' at (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/mari/AnnalsIndex/Masculine/Ciaran.shtml) dated to 784, 921, 928, and 1061.

OCM does list 'Gáeth' as "a relatively rare early name".

4 Cuilén O'Rothláin (M) - new name forwarded & new device forwarded

The submitter will allow only minor changes.

The name has been changed from 'Culann O'Rothláin' to more closely match the available documentation.

'Culann' was found to be the name of a smith from Irish myth, but could not be found as the name of a human. The closest form we were able to locate is 'Cuilén', from both OCM and Mari's index.

The citations of the Four Masters for 'Ó Rothláin' are correct. The Gaelic names are 'Amhlaibh Ua Rothláin' in entry 1208.10 and 'An Maigistir Ó Rothlain' in 1337.3. Woulfe also includes 'O Rotláin' as an undated header form.

5 Meriwyn MacDonald (F) - new name forwarded & new device returned

Per fess argent and sable a Phoenix gules enflamed Or.

Meriwyn is the submitter's legal given name (drivers license photocopy attached). Submitter understands that the -wyn ending indicates a masculine name in Welsh, but prefers to keep legal name as spelled If the name must be changed, the submitter cares most about language/culture. The submitter requests authenticity for Scottish.

The name 'Meriwyn' could not be found to be a Scottish name, and no changes were allowed, so authenticity remains unsatisfied. Even so, this name is registerable.

Black, p 486 under 'Macdonald' dates 'Makdonald' to 1571, 'John M'Donnyle' to 1326 and 'Therthelnac Makdonenalde' to 1251.

The submitted armory conflicts with Morgan Morfydd Gwilym (October 1982, via the Middle): Pean, a phoenix displayed gules, issuant from flames, maintaining in its beak a dexter hand couped proper, receiving only one CD for the change to the field (RfS.X.4.).

The submitted armory also probably conflicts with Leutpold Kampmann (September 1992, via Ansteorra): Per bend argent and gules, a phoenix counterchanged, rising from flames Or. Less than half of the submitted phoenix differs in coloration from the registered one, thus failing to satisfy RfS.X.4.. There is only one CD for the changes to the field (RfS.X.4.).

Conflict is similarly suspected with Drugan Draganov (June 2000, via Meridies): Per bend sinister Or and gules, a Russian firebird displayed counterchanged.

Concerns were also raised about whether the line of division was too low to be blazoned as 'per fess'.

6 Giovanna del Pennino (F) - new name forwarded

'Giovanna' - (feminine form of Giovanni) ( http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/naples.html ) 'Names of Women: 8 women were recorded in this document, with the given names Collela, Ioanna, Magalda, Oliva, Perretta, Pipa, Polisena, and Ramundetta. Giovanna, Pippa, and Pulisena are found in Florence in 1427, with Giovanna occurring 39 times and being the ninth most popular feminine name ...' The occupational surname was constructed using Italian dictionary ( http://www.wordreference.com/it/en/translation.asp ) ( http://italian.realdictionary.com/italian/penninoNoun.asp ). 'di' - 'of' 'Pennino' - 'nib' 'da' - from the same source, meaning a preposition indicating source, origin 'Dresden' - ( http://www.1911encyclopedia.org/D/DR/DRESDEN.htm ) Dresden (Old Slav Drezga, forest, Drezgajan, forest dwellers), which is known to have existed in 1206, is of Slavonic origin, and was originally founded on the right bank of the Elbe, on the site of the present Neustadt, which is thus actually the old town. It became the capital of Henry the Illustrious, margrave of Meissen, in 1270, but belonged for some time after his death, first to Wenceslaus of Bohemia, and next to the margrave of Brandenburg. Early in the 14th century it was restored to the margrave of Meissen. On the division of Saxony in 1485 it fell to the Alvertine line, which has since held it. Armory pended for redraw. If the name must be changed, the submitter cares most about meaning. The submitter requests authenticity for 15c Italian.

The name has been changed from 'Giovanna di Pennino da Dresden' to more closely match the available documentation and to better match the submitter's request for authenticity, though the meaning 'of Dresden' has been lost. The difficulty comes from the combination of a German locative with an otherwise Italian name, the request for authenticity, and the emphasis on meaning. The typical 15th century Italian method of referring to an emigrant from a German town, specifically Dresden, could not be discerned and applied, so the locative element has been removed in order to improve authenticity.

The documentation for 'Giovanna' above refers to Arval's article at (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/arval/catasto/).

'Pennino' can be found in De Felice's Cognomi under the header 'Penna' among many surnames derived from 'penna', meaning "feather, quill, plume".

The list of surnames in the Tre Maggiori, part of the Online Tratte of Office Holders 1282-1532, at (http://www.stg.brown.edu/projects/tratte/doc/SURNAM1.html) seems to demonstrate that a more likely form than 'di Pennino' would be 'del Pennino', showing numerous examples of surnames similarly formed.

'da Dresden' has the problem that it combines the Italian article with a German place-name, which is violation of RfS III.1.a., which demands that a name element be from a single language.

The documentation does not support the byname. The feminized form would be 'al-Bhakailiyya' or a similar spelling with equivalent pronunciation. More importantly, though, the name itself is not documented as being a period Arabic placename, as it must be by this precedent from the June 1998 LoAR:

"...only the actual registered form of an SCA branch name is automatically registerable as part of a personal name. If the name is translated into some other language, then it must be a plausible place-name in that language."

The submitter's name and his original arms, Sable, on a bend sinister vert fimbriated argent a gauntlet clenched, in dexter chief a fleur-de-lys Or, were both registered in July of 1990 (via the East).

The submitted armory can be blazoned as Sable, on a bend sinister argent a bend sinister vert charged with a gauntlet clenched Or, which has only one CD from either Elaina de Sinistre (July of 1983 via Atlantia): Sable, on a bend sinister argent an apple gules slipped and leaved proper, or from Kevin Peregrynne (January of 1973): Sable, on a bend sinister argent a peregrine falcon descending, talons extended and wings addorsed, azure for changes to the tertiary charge group(via RfS.X.4.j). This is however clear by the following precedent from the cover letter of the June 2004 LoAR:

This month we registered ...on a pale argent fimbriated vert, a peacock feather proper despite a possible conflict with ...on apale vert three fangs palewise Or. The argument was made that both pieces of armory could be considered as ...a pale vert charged with <stuff>. However, in order for the new submission to fit this interpretation, it would be blazoned as ...on a pale vert a pale argent charged with a peacock feather proper. That would be four layers, which is unregisterable. Since the unregisterable blazon is the only blazon under which the conflict exists, this is not a conflict.

13 Jost von Aichstadt (M) - new name forwarded & new device forwarded

An s-gabriel report exists, but was not presented. 'Jost' - Bahlow/Gentry 2nd, s.n. Jost p 252 dated as a given name to 1346. 'von' - 'from' 'Aichstadt' - town in southwest Germany; Brechenmacher (A-J); variant of Eichstadt p. 388 s.n. Eichstett(er) notes on Eichstadt; dates Einstat as a town to 1313; p15 s.n. Aichstetler is dated 1497; pg 388 s.n. Eichmann lists Aichmann dated 1497 If the name must be changed, the submitter cares most about sound. The submitter requests authenticity for 14c southwest Germany.

Brechenmacher p. 15 under 'Aichstetter' dates 'Sigmund Aichstetter' to 1497 and relates it to the place name 'Aichstetten' (undated).

'Noisette' is the French word for 'hazelnut', a family of plants native to Europe, the flower of which is what is depicted on the submitted armory. Numerous examples of flowers used in heraldry exist throughout medieval Europe.

14 Katarina von Freiburg (F) - new name forwarded & new device forwarded

Submitter will accept 'Katerina' if necessary. 'Katarina' - a variant of Katerina. Socin p 91 (s.n. Katherina) dates Katerina to 1287, 1290, 1291, 1294. Bahlow p 260 (s.n. Katharina) has the Metronymic Henneke Katerinen son dated 1336. Talan Gwynek, 'Medieval German Given Names from Silesia' has Katharina dated 1348 and Katherine date 1366. 'Freiburg' - grandfather clause. Also, Brechenmacher (A-J) p 498 s.n. Freiburg(er) has Burkhart von Frejburg 1325 and Cune Friburger 1356

The name 'Wilhelm von Freiburg' was registered by the submitter's father in June of 1984 (via the East). The submission form contains a portion written and signed by him explicitly stating that he is the submitter's father.

15 Katharine Aldrich (F) - new name forwarded

A list of feminine Personal Names found in Scottish Records (Post-1400 Names) by Talan Gwynek, mka Brian M. Scott (Medieval Names Archive) lists Katryne as 1528 (Scarth, 712). Early 16th Century Scottish Lowland Names by Sharon L. Krossa (Effric neyn Kenyeoch vc Ralte)(medieval names archive)lists Blak (from the Aberdeen Council Register 1500-1550) FROM 1500, 1503, 1518, 1519, 1532, 1540, 1548. If the name must be changed, the submitter cares most about language/culture. The submitter requests authenticity for circa 1500 lowland Scotland.

The original submission, 'Katrine Lyndesay', appeared on the April 2004 East Kingdom ILoI, and was returned for conflict with 'Catlin Lindsay', registered in September of 1994 (via Atenveldt).

Talan Gwynek's article can be found at (http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/bahlow_v.htm),which eliminates the need for photocopies. It dates the name 'Kirstyn' to 1381-83 as a variant of 'Christine'.

The correct page for the citation of Bahlow-Gentry is p319. It dates the spelling 'Mansveld' to 1396.

'mac' - 'son of' we understand the byname may need a grammar fix, but neither the submitter nor the consulting herald knows any Gaelic. The submitted arms conflict with Antonia d'Alessandria (December 2003 via Atenveldt): Azure, an owl close, maintaining in its talons a tuft of wool pendant therefrom a drop spindle argent, receiving only one CD for the change of the number of primary charges (RfS.X.4.f) and nothing further from the maintained wool and spindle.

21 Lucien de Pontivy (M) - new name forwarded & new device forwarded

The submitted arms could also be blazoned as Sable, on a bend cotised argent a bend azure charged with three harps palewise argent. As such, it could conflict with Marieke van de Dal (May of 1981 via the East) Sable, on a bend argent a bendlet voided azure, therein five beech leaves palewise vert, possibly receiving only a single CD for changes to the tertiaries (RfS.X.4.j). This is clear by the following precedent from the cover letter of the June 2004 LoAR:

If holding name, prefers Tsukime as given name; if can't include 'whale' as surname element, return. The 428 year gap between the documented given name and the documented surname solicits a temporal wierdness, but is registerable.

The submitter's current name is Meadhbh ni Loingsigh (August 1995 via the East). A new primary name, 'Medb ingen Loingsigh', and device, 'Azure, between the horns of a crescent a winged dolphin naiant argent', were forwarded for Laurel decision from the East in June of 2004.
