1 Caelin of Chepstow (m) - New Name Forwarded
Current name: Caelin of Chepstow

'Caelin' - appears in Ælfwyn æt Gyrwum's "Anglo-Saxon Names" (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/aelfwyn/bede.html) as a male Anglo-Saxon name [the only spelling listed there is 'Cælin']. 'Chepstow' - a Norman castle in southeast Wales built in 1067, documented online at (http://www.castlewales.com/chepstow.html).

2 Elinor Strangewayes - New Name Withdrawn & New Device Pended
Current name: Elinor Strangewayes

Quarterly azure and argent, two fish respectant and two fish addorsed counterchanged.

'Elinor' - Found in Mari Elspeth nic Bryan's "Naming Practices in 16th Century Gloucestershire" (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/mari/GlocNamePractices/RelativeFrequencies.html). 'Strangewayes' - found of Ashmolean Museum of Art & Archaeology, Department of Antiquities website in the listing entitled "Monumental Brass Rubbings for England Dorset", 'Sir Gyle Strangeways 1562'. (http://www.ashmol.ox.ac.uk./ash/departments/antiquities/brass/counties/Dorset.html). Additionally, A Dictionary of English Surnames, Revised Edition by P.H. Reaney & R.M. Wilson p430, s.n. 'Strangeway', 'Strangways' lists 'Richard Strangeways' 1513. [The name 'Elinor Strangewayes' appeared on last month's ILoI from a different submitter.]

Due to submission of this exact name by another submitter appearing on the previous month's ILoI, this submitter has already submitted a new name. The device will be pended until a successful name is passed.

Though the orientation of the charges in this device are consistant with marshalled armory, some commenters felt that the design is logically comparable to marshalled arms featuring combattant charges. Conversely, RfS.XI.3.a. limits the exception from the rule against apparent marshalling to "identical charges", which might arguably exclude charges which are not identical in orientation. This interpretation is supported by the idea that in the special case of charges like combattant charges, every charge is considered to be 'combattant'. In this case, the charges are not so uniformly described. It was also mentioned that the use of a non-European species of fish and the strange combination of orientations may each be a step from period practice, and therefore returnable in combination.

The blazon has been changed from 'Quarterly azure and argent, in bend two fish contourny argent and in sinister two fish azure'.

3 Gwillim Kynith - New Device Returned

Or, a coney and a fox combattant gules.

The submitter's name was forwarded to Laurel on the East Kingdom July 2004 XLoI.

This conflicts with James the Fox (July, 1971), 'Or, a fox rampant guardant gules', receiving only one CD for the addition of the coney (RfS.X.4.f.).

4 Geoffrey Blesedale - New Device Forwarded

Gyronny gules and argent, a sheep couchant sable sustaining a halberd proper bitted sable.

The submitter's name was registered in October 2003. There have been two previous attempts from this submitter to register a device. The first, Per chevron inverted azure and vert, a goutte Or issuant from the base of the division, appeared on the East Kingdom September 2002 ILoI and was returned for administrative reasons and for probable conflict. The second, Per chevron gules and sable, in dexter chief a compass rose argent, in sinister chief a moon in her plenitude argent, in base an acorn over two garbs, all Or, appeared on the East Kingdom July 2004 ILoI and was returned for containing more than two types of charges in a single charge group (RfS VIII.1.a.). This new submission is a complete redesign.

Several commenters pointed out that the placement of the proper halberd puts the argent blade on an argent portion of the field, which is returnable by RfS.VIII.2.b.i.. I think that the blade looks more sable than argent, which would alleviate the problem. The blazon has therefore been changed from 'Gyronny gules and argent, a sheep couchant sable maintaining a halberd blazoned proper'.

5 Geoffrey Blesedale - New Badge Forwarded

Quarterly Or and azure, two lyphads sails unfurled azure.

The previous submission, Quarterly argent and azure, two lymphads sails unfurled azure, was returned by Laurel in October 2003 for conflict with Lee Sharpeyes, Quarterly argent and azure, four dhows reversed counterchanged. This submission clears that conflict.

7 Pamela Gatterlli - Resub Device Returned

Sable a bend sinister Or between two pineapples Or leaved vert.

The submitter's name was registered in April 2003 when the previous device submission, Lee Sharpeyes, Quarterly argent and azure, four dhows reversed counterchanged, was returned for multiple weirdnesses. This new submission addresses the problem by having just a single weirdness.

This conflicts with Hermann Otto Koehlermann (January, 1973), 'Sable, a bend sinister Or', receiving only one CD for addition of the pineapples (RfS.X.4.b.).

8 Talan Gwyllt - New Device Returned
Current name: Talan Gwyllt

Per pale vert and argent, two horses heads couped counterchanged.

The submitter's name was accepted in September 2004.

This conflicts with John Lyttleton (February, 1992 via the East), 'Per bend rayonny vert and argent, two horse's heads couped counterchanged', receiving only one CD for changes to the field (RfS.X.a.i.).
