Unto the East Kingdom College of Heralds, upon the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, greetings and every good thing! Here is the Letter of Decisions for the Internal Letter of Intent issued on July 2, 2014. I am omitting the original documentation from my write-up in an effort to streamline the decision-making process.

Many thanks to the following commenters who provided assistance this month: Andreas von Meißen (Rowel), Aria Gemina Mala, Aryanhwy merch Catmael (Schwarzdrachen), Beatrice Domenici della Campana, Brigida von München (Saker), Caoimhin McKee (Sanglier Rouge), Christan af Hilsonger, Conall an Doire, Donovan Shinnock, Emma de Fetherstan (Wreath Emeritus), Gawain of Miskbridge (Green Anchor), Gunnvor silfraharr (Orle), Isabella Delfino, Jeanne de Robin, Juette Copin, Konstantia Kaloethina (Gold Falcon), Lijsbet van Catwiic, Matilda Wynter, Rohese de Dinan (Shadowdale), Ryan McWhyte (Brigantia), Shauna of Carrick Point, Simeon ben Iucef de Alcacar, Solveig Throndardottir, Togashi Kih{o-}, Þorfinn Hrolfsson, Vettorio Antonello, Violet Hughes and Yehuda ben Moshe (Elmet).

1: Allerick van den Broecke - New Name - New Name Forwarded

2: Ana Tree Blood - New Name Forwarded and New Device Returned

Sable, a wolf's head erased and in chief between two mullets of four points elongated to base argent, a rose argent seeded Or and barbed vert

Unfortunately this device must be returned because it conflicts with: (1) William of Hoghton (Aug. 1982, West): Sable, a grey wolf's head erased proper; and (2) Talanque (Jan. 1973): Sable, a horned wolf's head erased argent. In both cases, there is only a single DC for adding a secondary charge group.

3: Basingestoches, Canton of - New Branch Name Pended & New Device Pended

Sable, a tower argent within a laurel wreath Or, a chief invected barry invected azure and Or.

This name and device have been pended awaiting a corrected petition from the local group.

4: Brigit inghean ui Dhomhnaill - Resub Household Name Forwarded

Hammer Fall House

Commenters noted that the examples of inn signs using a person's full name found in Mari ingen Briain meic Donnchada's "English Sign Names From 17th Century Tradesman's Tokens" (http://medievalscotland.org/kmo/Tokens/Patterns.shtml#SpecificPerson) are all undated or dated after 1650. Nevertheless, I am sending this household name up for additional commentary in the hope that more documentation can be found by a wider commenting audience. None of the fictional places or entities named "Hammerfell" or "Hammerfall" were deemed important enough to protect by commenters.

5: Brigit inghean ui Dhomhnaill - Resub Device Forwarded

Per fess azure and Or, a sea lion maintaining a spiked mace counterchanged

6: Carillion, Barony of - Resub Order Name Forwarded

Order of Iron

Originally submitted as the Order of Irons Bell, I received little commentary on whether the Order Name pattern of Saint + Other can fairly omit the label "Saint" in front of the saint's name. The alternate proposed name, Order of Iron, definitely is registerable. I am forwarding the name in this form, but indicating that the Barony would prefer the name as originally submitted.

7: Carillion, Barony of - Resub Badge Forwarded

(Fieldless) A bell per pale sable and Or

8: Carillion, Barony of - Resub Badge Forwarded

(Fieldless) On a chalice bendwise sable, a bell palewise Or

9: Diana Spencer of Barmore - Resub Device Forwarded

Purpure, a bend sinister wavy between a key fesswise and an escallop argent

The blazon has been corrected to indicate that the bend is a bend sinister.

10: Ingveldr Hornabrjótr - New Name Forwarded

11: Kendrick Harper of Forrest Moor - Resub Device Withdrawn

Per bend argent and gules, a bend and a chief azure

The submitter withdrew this device by e-mail to Blue Tyger on July 15, 2014.

12: Lijsbet van Catwiic - New Name Forwarded and New Device Forwarded

Per chevron inverted urdy purpure and argent semy of escallops purpure, a seadragon naiant Or

13: Magnús Surtsson - New Name Forwarded and New Device Returned

Per pale Or and vert, two sets of three triangles conjoined one and two counterchanged

Marshalling is prohibited in SCA armory. Unfortunately, this design runs afoul of SENA A.6.F.2.d: "When any section of such a field contains multiple charges of the same type in a way that cannot be described as a standard single pattern covering the entire field, multiple charges of different types, or multiple charge groups, it creates the appearance of marshalling." One of the examples expressly given in this section is almost directly parallel to the submitter's armory: "Similarly, Per pale sable and erminois, each section charged with three billets two and one counterchanged creates the appearance of marshalling, because each section appears to be an independent piece of armory." Therefore, the device must be returned for the appearance of marshalling, which is prohibited by SENA.

14: Meave Squirel le Taverner - Resub Device Forwarded

Vair, a two-headed squirrel rampant maintaining an acorn vert

While some commenters had difficulty identifying the primary charge, I think that it falls within the range of acceptable artistic license. I am forwarding the device without a redraw.

15: Muirenn ingen Dúnadaig - New Badge Forwarded

(Fieldless) A fox's mask within and conjoined to an annulet of ivy vert

16: Rys Waytheman - New Name Forwarded and New Device Returned

Per fess azure and argent, a lion rampant counterchanged

Unfortunately, this lovely and very period device conflicts with the armory of Riocárd Ó Donnghaile (Feb. 1998, Atlantia): Per fess azure and argent, a tyger rampant counterchanged. While there is a DC between a heraldic tyger and a lion, [Andreas Caunteton, Jan 2005 LoAR, R-Atlantia], there is not a Substantial Change of type. A Substantial Change or SC is required in this instance to clear the conflict.

17: Simon Peter Squirrel - New Name Forwarded and New Device Forwarded

Or, three cats sejant guardant sable and on a chief azure an arrow Or

The blazon has been corrected to identify the cats as sable and the arrow as being in its default posture.

18: Storan{e-} Sauromatis - New Name Forwarded and New Device Forwarded

Argent, a polypus purpure and on a base azure an escallop argent

19: Thomas de Marr - New Name Forwarded and New Device Forwarded

Quarterly sable and vert, a dragon displayed head facing sinister Or between in chief two crosses clechy fitchy at the foot argent, all within an orle Or

Commenters uniformly agreed that the historical Thomas, Count/Earl of Mar, who was known as Thomas de Marr, was not significant enough to protect.

The blazon has been tweaked to better identify the design. Commenters raised issues as to the somewhat train drawing of the dragon. However, I believe that the rendering of the dragon falls within the range of acceptable artistic license. Commenters were also concerned about the shape of the crosses. While it appears that clechy fitchy at the foot adequately describes the crosses, I am requesting additional guidance from Wreath.
