14 February 2015

Unto the East Kingdom College of Heralds, upon the Feast of Valentine, greetings and every good thing! Here is the Letter of Decisions for the Internal Letters of Intent issued on December 28, 2014 and January 8, 2015.

Your efforts and insight are greatly appreciated.

Always your servant,
Alys Mackyntoich
Blue Tyger Herald

1: Alys du Bois - New Name Forwarded

Commenters were able to document this name as an entirely late 16th century English name. This name should not be in conflict with Alicia du Bois, currently on the An Tir 11/30/2014 LoI, as Alicia has at least one more syllable than Alys. Under PN.3.C.2, the addition or removal of a syllable makes two names clear.

2: Basil Tagaris - New Name Forwarded and New Device Forwarded

Vert, an increscent moon Or and a bordure Or semy of human eyes purpure

I have changed the blazon to make clear that the moon is Or, not Or semy of eyes. Commenters questioned whether the slight tilt of the moon from a true palewise orientation was an issue. As I believe this is within the range of artistic license, I am forwarding the device for additional commentary.

3: Calvius Nero - New Name Forwarded and New Device Forwarded

Vert, on a bend Or between two tygers rampant argent a shovel sable

This device appears to be clear of the device of Rhonwen of Watkins Hall (November 1995, Caid): Vert, on a bend between two dolmens Or a spade sable. There is a DC for the type and a DC for the tincture of the secondaries.

4: Calvius Nero - New Badge Forwarded

Argent, two cabbages vert and a shovel sable

This appears to be the first registration of a cabbage in the Society. Commenters provided images of cabbages from period art that look like the cabbages depicted in the device.

5: Cassandra Blondel de Seint Alban - New Name Forwarded and New Device Forwarded

Azure, a cross of Lorraine argent and on a chief Or three dragonflies vert

This device appears to be clear of the device of Andrew Montgomerie (Feb. 1994, Drachenwald): Azure, a cross of Lorraine argent and on a chief Or three quill pens bendwise sinister gules. There is a DC for the type of the tertiary charges, a DC for the tincture of the tertiary charges, and possibly also a DC for their orientation.

6: Caterina di Luca - New Name Forwarded

7: Cellach Dhonn inghean Mhic an Mhadaidh - New Device Forwarded

Azure, a talbot passant and on a chief argent a key azure

8: Chelsey of Gloucester - New Name Forwarded and New Device Forwarded

Quarterly purpure and vert, an escallop inverted Or

ffride wlffsdotter found evidence of the spelling Gloucester in 1599, meaning that the submitter does not have to rely on the Lingua Anglica allowance.

9: Conall an Doire - New Household Name Forwarded and New Badge Forwarded

House of Thirteen Oaks

Argent, five oak leaves in cross vert within a bordure vert semy of crescents argent

Submitted as House of the Thirteen Oaks, inn signs using numbers generally appear not to use "the" in such names. I have deleted it to more closely follow the documented pattern. The OED dates the spelling "oak" to 1577.

10: Concordia of the Snows, Barony of - New Order Name Forwarded and New Badge Forwarded

Order of the Feather

(Fieldless) A feather bendwise sinister argent

11: Concordia of the Snows, Barony of - New Order Name Forwarded and New Badge Forwarded

Order of the Ram's Horn of Concordia of the Snows

(Fieldless) A ram's horn argent

Submitted as Order of the Ram's Horn, this name conflicts with "Rams Horn, Order of the," registered to the Barony of Thor's Mountain (April 1977, Meridies). The Barony specifically consented to adding of Concordia of the Snows to clear conflicts, and I have made that change.

12: Concordia of the Snows, Barony of - New Order Name Forwarded and New Badge Forwarded

Order of the Spoon

(Fieldless) A wooden spoon bendwise sinister proper

13: Concordia of the Snows, Barony of - New Badge Association Forwarded

Order of the White Hare

(Fieldless) A hare courant to sinister per pale azure and argent

14: Daithi Dubh - New Device Returned

Vert, a dragon rampant between three mullets voided and interlaced within and conjoined to annulets argent

This device is being returned for redrawing by the submitter. The mullets and annulets are unacceptably thin, being little more than single lines. Such depictions consistently have been returned as unidentifiable.

15: Dionise O Towie - New Name Forwarded

16: Duncan Kerr - New Augmentation of Arms Forwarded

Azure, on a bend argent three crosses couped palewise azure, and as an augmentation, on a canton per bend sinister Or and argent, a dragon's head couped azure

17: Edana neyn Alan MacKinnon - New Name Forwarded and New Device Pended

Sable, a bend checky argent and vert between two leopards rampant Or

The bend as depicted is counter-compony, rather than checky, as it only has two rows of squares. The submitter has promised to provide revised artwork more accurately depicting her intent, so this device has been pended rather than returned.

18: Eithne ingen Máel Dúin - New Name Forwarded and New Device Forwarded

Or, on a bend sinister vert between two thistles proper three trefoils palewise Or

Submitted as Eithne inghean Máel Dúin, the name has been changed to Eithne ingen Máel Dúin. inghean is appropriate only for post-1200 Gaelic, and cannot be combined in the same name phrase with the pre-1200 Máel Dúin under SENA PN.1.B.1. Fortunately the submitter permits all changes. Song Zidie found evidence in the Annals confirming that Máel Dúin is the genitive as well as the nominative form of the father's name.

19: Eleanor FitzPatrick - New Augmentation of Arms Forwarded

Per pale gules and Or, a cross quadrate couped counterchanged, and as an augmentation on a lozenge per bend sinister Or and argent, a dragon's head couped azure

20: Elizabeth Elenore Lovell - New Badge Forwarded

Sable, a bee proper charged with a goutte de sang, in chief a coronet Or

21: Genevieve Velleman - New Name Forwarded

22: Jacobus Jager Dracke - New Name Change From Holding Name Forwarded

Old Item: Jacobus of Carolingia, to be released.

23: Kalonymos ben Tamar - New Name Forwarded

24: Katherine Meade - Resub Badge Forwarded

(Fieldless) An elephant rampant ermine bearing on its back a howdah gules

25: Kristin Alarsdottir - New Name Forwarded and New Device Forwarded

Quarterly sable and Or, four domestic cats sejant affronty counterchanged

As originally submitted, the submitter omitted the accent from the given name, but retained the accents in the byname. This is not permitted. Accents can be omitted from Old Norse names, but they must be omitted consistently throughout. [Sadb Hálsdóttir, 5/2012 LoAR, A-An Tir]. In addition, the submitter has an authenticity request for an unspecified time and culture. ffride wlffsdotter advised in commentary that Kristin Alarsdottir is an authentic 14th century middle Norwegian form. Therefore, I have opted to remove all of the accents in an attempt to provide the submitter with an authentic form.

26: Muirenn Bán - New Device Forwarded

Argent, a magpie proper maintaining an oak leaf palewise vert and on a chief azure three crescents argent

I have tweaked the blazon to indicate that the oak leaf is palewise

27: René de la Rue - New Name Forwarded and New Device Forwarded

Sable, two rapiers in saltire argent surmounted by a lion's head erased Or between three fleurs de lys argent

I have simplified the blazon as suggested by Istvan Non Scripta.

28: Sáerlaith ingen Taithlig - New Device Returned

Sable semy of flames argent, a phoenix Or rising from flames gules

SENA A.2.C.2 states that "[e]lements must be drawn to be identifiable." Commenters uniformly found the flames unidentifiable. Therefore I am returning this device for redrawing.

29: Sláine an Doire - New Name Forwarded

Commenters identified a possible conflict with Áine an Doire (Oct. 2014, East). The two names appear to be clear by a substantial change to the first syllable of the given name under SENA PN.3.C.2.

30: Sorcha inghean Duinn - New Name Forwarded

31: Sybill Teller - New Name Forwarded

32: Þórormr Barnakarl - New Name Forwarded

33: Umm Hamza bint Rashid ibn Da'ud al-Harraniyya - New Name Forwarded and New Device Forwarded

Sable, on a hand of Fatima inverted Or a mullet of six points voided and interlaced gules, a base lozengy Or and gules

There was much debate among commenters as to whether the hand of Fatima should be blazoned as "inverted." Looking over recent registrations, it appears that this depiction of a hand of Fatima is blazoned as inverted, and I have changed the blazon accordingly.
